A Legacy of Inclusion and Service Since 1987

The Duarte Rotary Club made history by championing equality in Rotary International. Today, we continue that mission through community service and the Four-Way Test.

Our legacy

The club that changed Rotary International

The Duarte Rotary Club played a pivotal role in breaking barriers for women in service organizations, setting the stage for a historic shift in Rotary International. In the 1970s, recognizing the value of inclusivity, the club made the bold decision to admit women as members, directly defying Rotary International’s long-standing male-only policy. As a consequence, their charter was revoked in 1978, but instead of accepting this decision, the club fought back. Determined to challenge the injustice, Duarte Rotary took legal action, arguing that service organizations like Rotary should not discriminate based on gender. Their unwavering commitment led the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where, on May 4, 1987, a 7-0 ruling upheld California’s anti-discrimination laws, affirming that Rotary Clubs could not exclude women. This victory was not just a legal triumph, it was a groundbreaking moment that forced Rotary International to evolve. Following the ruling, Rotary International officially changed its policy in 1989, allowing women to join clubs worldwide. Today, women play an integral role in Rotary, holding leadership positions and making meaningful contributions to communities around the globe. The Duarte Rotary Club’s courage and persistence were instrumental in shaping this progress, proving that one club’s determination could create lasting change. Their legacy is a testament to the power of standing up for what is right, ensuring that Rotary remains a place where service and leadership are open to all.
